What is Anangaranga?

Anangaranga is a masterpiece that, by virtue of its content, relegated the Kamasutra to a second position. While Vatsyayana described four types of women (Padmini, Chitrini, Shankhini, and Hastini), Kalyanamalla elaborates on thirty-seven distinct categories of women. The work is enriched by vivid descriptions of experiences involving them.

Furthermore, its detailed classifications of female anatomy (both external and internal), female psychology, virtues and flaws, and the nuances of attraction and enchantment are unparalleled. The psychological chapter titled ‘Chittavidhayakam’ continues to astonish modern experts in psychology. Anangaranga remains a vast treasury of theories and paradoxes.

While the Kamasutra gained global popularity because it reached safe hands, Anangaranga was suppressed due to the intervention of the colonial administration. The Victorian government feared its content, particularly the chapters on attraction, allure, and mesmerization. Although some translated versions appeared later, they were all largely incomplete.

Who was Kalyanamalla?

Kalyanamalla was the author of Anangaranga, a scholar, traveler, poet, and a multifaceted genius. He was born into the Karpura dynasty of the Kalinga region (present-day Andhra Pradesh) as the grandson of Trailokychandramalla and the son of Gajamalla. However, he was a perennial traveler. Welcomed everywhere due to his extraordinary charisma, Kalyanamalla authored several works, but Anangaranga is considered his paramount masterpiece.

Kalyanamalla composed Anangaranga for the mental recreation of Lad Lodi, the (Deputy) Sultan of Jaunpur, to whom he was a well-wisher and a mentor. Vallabharayar’s ‘Kalyanamalla Charitham’ suggests that Kalyanamalla’s true intent was to divert the Sultan from a perilous confrontation with his half-brother, Ibrahim Lodi (Reign: 1517-1526), the Sultan of Delhi, and instead redirect him toward the pursuit of pleasure and knowledge to save his life.
